BagLimit Support
BagLimit shows British Columbia fishing regulations for the spot you're standing on, and it works without a signal once you've downloaded your area.
Need help? Email support@baglimit.app. Tell us your phone model, the BagLimit version if you know it (on iPhone: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → BagLimit) and, if a rule looks wrong, the lake, river or saltwater area and the species. We aim to reply within 3 business days.
Is BagLimit official?
No. BagLimit is an independent guide. It isn't affiliated with, or endorsed by, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) or the Province of British Columbia. The official regulations, your licence conditions and DFO fishery notices are the law. If BagLimit and an official source disagree, the official source is right. Always check before you fish:
- Freshwater (Province of BC): https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/sports-culture/recreation/fishing-hunting/fishing
- Tidal waters (DFO): https://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/tidal-maree/index-eng.html
- DFO fishery notices (in-season changes): https://notices.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fns-sap/index-eng.cfm
What's covered?
- Freshwater: the BC Freshwater Fishing Regulations Synopsis 2025–2027, by region and management unit. Packs are available for all nine regions: 1 (Vancouver Island), 2 (Lower Mainland), 3 (Thompson), 4 (Kootenay), 5 (Cariboo), 6 (Skeena), 7A (Omineca), 7B (Peace) and 8 (Okanagan).
- Saltwater (tidal): DFO sport-fishing rules by Management Area and Subarea for 12 areas: 2, 13–20, 25, 28 and 29. Most are on the south coast (the Strait of Georgia, Howe Sound, Burrard Inlet and the east and south coasts of Vancouver Island); Area 2 is Haida Gwaii and Area 25 is on the west coast of Vancouver Island. For other saltwater areas, BagLimit links you to DFO. Shellfish rules aren't covered; check DFO before harvesting shellfish.
What do KEEP, RELEASE, CLOSED and CHECK mean?
For each species, BagLimit shows:
- KEEP: you may keep fish, up to the daily and possession limits shown.
- RELEASE: catch and release only. You can't keep this species here.
- CLOSED: fishing for this species is closed here.
- CHECK (shown as UNSURE for some saltwater species): BagLimit can't give a clear answer for this spot (for example, a rule depends on dates, gear or a boundary). Read the rule text and the official source.
Daily and possession limits, size limits and special rules appear when you open a species.
How do packs work?
A pack holds the rules for one freshwater region or one tidal area.
- Open the Packs tab.
- Tap Download rules for my area (it uses your location to pick the right pack), or choose an area from the list.
- The pack is saved on your phone. When a newer version is published, the pack shows Update.
Each pack is checked with a security signature before it's installed, so a damaged or altered download is refused. To free up space, remove a pack from the Packs tab. You can download it again later.
Does it work offline?
Yes, for the rules. Once a pack is on your phone, you can check rules, search lakes and rivers, and use your GPS position without a signal. Download the packs you need before you leave coverage.
Two things need a connection:
- downloading or updating packs;
- the map background, which comes from Apple Maps or Google Maps and may not load (or may show only areas you've viewed recently) when you're offline. Your GPS position and the rules still work.
How current is the data?
Every rules screen shows "Guide only" and the date of the data in your pack. Regulations can change at any time, including in-season closures and DFO fishery notices, and your downloaded pack won't change until you update it. Update often, and check fishery notices before every saltwater trip.
Can I trust the location?
GPS can be off by tens of metres or more, especially near shore, in canyons, under trees or on the water. Boundary lines in BagLimit are approximations, not legal surveys. Near a boundary, a river mouth or a closure line, assume the stricter rule applies until you've confirmed it. BagLimit is not a navigation aid.
I said no to location. Can I still use BagLimit?
Yes. Search for a lake or river by name, or press and hold on the map to drop a pin. To turn location on later: Settings → BagLimit → Location (iPhone), or Settings → Apps → BagLimit → Permissions (Android).
What does BagLimit do with my data?
Your location is used on your phone and isn't sent to us. There are no accounts, ads or analytics. Read the Privacy Policy.
